In a move that stunned the basketball world, Luka Dončić is officially a member of the Los Angeles Lakers. The trade, which took place less than three days ago, saw the Lakers part ways with Anthony Davis and Max Christie in a three-team deal involving the Dallas Mavericks and Utah Jazz. The acquisition of Dončić, the 24-year-old Slovenian phenom, marks a new chapter for the Lakers as they aim for an NBA championship.
Dončić, who won his first scoring title last season and led the Mavericks to the NBA Finals, has established himself as one of the league’s brightest stars. A five-time All-Star and five-time All-NBA selection, Dončić’s combination of scoring, playmaking, and leadership is a perfect fit for a Lakers team already led by LeBron James.
The trade has already sent waves through the NBA, and for James, who has played with Davis for the past six seasons, the transition is a surreal one. After the Lakers’ 122-97 win over the Clippers on Tuesday, James reflected on the shock of the trade and what it means for the team moving forward.
“It still pretty much didn’t seem real until I saw Luka today and I saw a clip of AD at the Dallas shootaround,” James said. “That’s when it finally hit me, like, ‘Oh s—, this is real.'”
The veteran forward made it clear that he is committed to the Lakers and will do everything in his power to ensure a smooth transition for Dončić. “As the leader of the team, as one of the captains of the team, it’s my job to make it as seamless as possible,” James added.
While James has embraced the change, the trade has left a lasting emotional impact on Dončić’s former teammates. Mavericks guard Kyrie Irving, speaking after Dallas’ 118-116 loss to the Philadelphia 76ers, described the trade as “a grieving process” for him and his teammates. Irving, who played alongside Dončić in Dallas, admitted that he never expected to see the day when his close friend would be traded away.
“Just really shocked,” Irving said. “You just don’t imagine you’re going to get ready to go to sleep and then you find out news like that. It’s still a grieving process right now. I miss my hermano.”

Irving also expressed his excitement about the opportunity to finally play alongside Anthony Davis, a player he has long admired and once hoped to team up with during his time in Boston. Despite the difficult emotions, Irving remains focused on the future, ready to help the Mavericks compete for a championship, even without Dončić.
“We’re putting the pieces together,” Irving said. “The tone is improving, just because everybody had questions, a little confusion, and that’s about it. We’re just talking to each other, making sure we’re all good, and putting the game first.”
As the dust settles, the Lakers now look to build around their new superstar, Dončić, while the Mavericks turn the page and aim to make another deep playoff run. The basketball world will undoubtedly be watching closely as these two teams clash on February 25 in what promises to be an emotional showdown between Dončić’s new Lakers and the Mavericks he once led.
