Jamel Walker celebrating his 1,000 point win with his friends and family.
February 14, 2025 – In an exciting milestone for the Doherty Memorial Boys Basketball Team, Varsity captain Jamel Walker achieved an impressive feat, scoring his 1,000th career point in a thrilling game against Wachusett Regional High School on February 11, 2025.
Jamel, a standout player for the Highlanders, was instrumental in his team’s success, but he was quick to credit his teammates for their support and contribution. “The experience of getting the points in the Wachusett game was fun because it was a close game,” Jamel reflected after the game. “But before the game, I celebrated with my family, and it was like a weight off my chest.”
Among the key players that helped Jamel reach this milestone were senior teammates Ezekiel Wilson, Josh Romeo, and Jalen Johnson, as well as juniors George Kyriazis and Ryan Dennis. Sophomore Hezaki Brown also played a vital role in the team’s dynamic play. The athletes displayed incredible teamwork, athleticism, and sportsmanship throughout the game, showing the strength of the Highlanders’ roster.
The energetic fan section was out in full force, bringing excitement and support as family and friends cheered the team on. The Doherty cheerleaders kept the crowd hyped with spirited routines that kept the energy high, competing with the cheers of the Wachusett cheerleading team. The atmosphere was electric and showcased the community support for the team.
Doherty’s assistant coach Mr. O’Neil, along with head coach Jermaine Chavis, have been guiding the team through a remarkable season. Their leadership has played a key role in the team’s continued success, and the players are flourishing under their mentorship.
For Jamel, the achievement was more than just about the points. Surrounded by his mother, grandmother, aunts, and cousins, who were all there to celebrate with him, it was a moment of pride and relief. “It felt great to have my family there, sharing the moment with me. It’s a memory I’ll always think of.”
We at the Highlanders Herald want to shine a well-deserved spotlight on Jamel Walker and the entire Doherty Memorial Boys Basketball Team. We wish them the best of luck as they continue their season, and we look forward to seeing more great performances on the court.
