What is St. Patrick’s Day? Well, St Patrick’s Day is a holiday celebrated on March 17th. To what started out as a holiday associated with religion, now it is more of a remembrance and time to celebrate Irish culture. St. Patrick, who the holiday is named after, was alive during the fifth century. He was known as a follower and preacher of God, bringing Christianity to Ireland. Even though his legacy has been less well known over the years, St. Patrick’s Day is still going strong.
Why does this matter? Well, even if you are not religious or Irish, St. Patrick’s Day is a day of celebration. So, let your spirit gleam this St. Patrick’s day and celebrate in a way you can!
Firstly, every year Worcester has a St. Patrick’s Day Parade. Now happening on March 16, 2025, this is Worcester’s 43rd year hosting this parade. A great time to see the festivities and celebrate, this parade has many in attendance. If you are one to stay home and not endure in a public setting, no worries! The parade is going to be LIVE on Spectrum TV (channel one and seven hundred seventy-six) and on Spectrum’s News app. The streaming starts at 12:30pm during the parade. The great thing is there is re-streaming on the 17th and the 23rd! Click here for information on the parade.
Another way to welcome in the St. Patrick’s Day festivities is getting a sweet treat perhaps. McDonald’s has their Shamrock Shakes on their menu for the leprechaun season! This year there is even a special bonus. Not only are there Shamrock Shakes but there are OREO Shamrock McFlurry’s as well! Double the sugar, double the celebration after all! A shamrock is a type of clover that has three leaves and is a common symbol of Ireland. So why not go out and buy yourself your own Shamrock in the form of a treat? It sure looks luscious!
Ireland’s colors are green, white, and orange. Dressing up for this holiday sounds like fun. Maybe even be bold and….GO ALL GREEN! Show your Irish spirit and dress for the occasion. Many tend to wear green classes, necklaces, headbands, hats, Celtics jerseys, tutus, green shirt or sweatshirt, or perhaps a green wig if you feel generous. And mine as well get all your friends on board and throw a St. Patty’s Day themed party. There could be a decked out house, cookie baking (green frosting of course!), or simply some karaoke in your Ireland flag colors.
While everyone can be Irish for a day, one can add a traditional meal to the mix. Typically a part of the Irish-American culture, corn beef, cabbage, and potatoes are eaten on this holiday. The national dish of Ireland is Irish Stew. Other foods can include Irish soda bread, shepherd’s pie, apple crumble or apple cake. It sure seems like a good opportunity to try new recipes and broaden your knowledge on other cultures.
As numerous people can tell, St. Patrick’s day has rich traditions but new traditions can be made every year. All a person needs is a gleaming spirit and voilà, you can be Irish for a day.
