Black History month is coming to an end but Black history is always being made. These years have been monumental so we’re taking the time to look at some more recent events that are leading us in the right direction.
1. Beyonce winning Album Of The Year at the 2025 Grammys
The most sought after award in all of music. Every singer, producer, writer and music industry official wishes to have the honor under their belt. The fight was brutal and all artists underwent a sturdy campaign to for the famous accola of music but only one could come out on top. Beyonce conquered with her album Cowboy Carter, and made history as the first Black woman to win Album of the Year in almost thirty years, since Lauryn Hill’s hip hop album The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill in February of 1999.
Cowboy Carter as an album is a history lesson on Black people’s role in American history and their role in the making of country music. So this win was extremely fitting.
2. All Black podium at the 2024 Olympics
With all eyes on them, Rebeca Andrade, Simone Biles, and Jordan Chiles made history as the first all black podium in any sport at the Olympics. This feat marks a milestone in the fight for representation for Black women especially. Andrade seen in the number one spot has already made history as the first female Brazilian gymnast to win a medal at the Olympics in 2020 where she won gold in the vault event. The 2024 Olympics made her the most decorated Brazilian Olympian in any sport of any gender with 6 medals.
In a similar fashion, in the 2024 Olympics Biles became the most decorated gymnast in history and first Black woman to win all-around gymnastics title twice. Biles has even commented on how Andrade is the closest competitor she has ever faced. This win was not just a win for the three Olympians but for Black gymnasts everywhere.
3. First Black party leader of Congress
Succeeding Rep. Nancy Pelosi as the House Democratic leader, Rep. Hakeem Jeffries makes history as the first Black party lead of any chamber on Congress. The New York representative came to power as a result of the 2022 midterm elections removing Nancy Pelosi as Speaker of the House and House Democratic Leader. Jeffries currently is in the House of Representatives, but out of both chambers of Congress, Jeffries is the first Black man to lead any political party. He has received lots of praise from Democrats and Pelosi herself when he was first running for House Democratic leader.
4. LeBron James Breaks NBA scoring record
Gaining more and more traction lately through memes online, LeBron James has gained quite the fanbase; a fanbase that does not fool around when it comes to their living legend. Love him or hate him, James has made a name for himself and proven himself a number of times to be an absolute beast in the court and a master of the game. There have been talks of him even being the greatest of all time. There is no definitive answer, but what is undeniable is the amount of broken records he has managed to acquire in his many years of playing. On February 7th, 2023, in a game against the Oklahoma City Thunder, James beat Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’s record of 38,387 which was the most career points of any player. Then on March 3rd, 2024, James scored his 40,000th career point playing against the Denver Nuggets breaking his own record and making him the first NBA athlete to reach this milestone.
Angela Davis once said, “We should seek out all the doors which still remain ajar, however slight the opening might be.” Black history is being made everyday and every tiny step matters. Seek out all the doors.
