I have a dog named Shadow who came from Texas and is 25% Blue Lacy, 25% Labrador, and the rest of his DNA is from the pit bull family. Shadow is a smart dog and the owners at the shelter who cared for him once thought he was a Great Dane. He was overlooked because he was a big dog for his age and stayed at the shelter longer than necessary. Shadow had separation anxiety in the beginning of being home with me and my family but has since outgrown of it. I have a cat about 11-year-old named Sage who is considered a tiger breed. I considered Sage the Alpha male and he has shown that as he has out-lived the other two cats we had homed. I have had Sage since he was a kitten and he resembles a siamese cat. I also have gold fish. I think relationships are important when they continue to serve you, if not, it is okay to move on with a mutual understanding that we can outgrow old relationships to allow new ones to enter. Evolution takes place naturally to allow someone to change, grow, and continue on their path to a divine purpose. This may mean that other changes in our life may have to take place for us to reach our full potential and live out our purpose. – Mrs. Shavon Meyers.

Q: How did you get started in your current profession? What attracted you to your current line of work, and has your passion for it changed over time?
I have always worked in a setting where counseling to take place. I started at college, earned a professional degree in counseling and completed my internship and applied for jobs based off of my experience. I love what I do and my passion has grown into different facets of the field such as having a radio show, volunteering to speak at schools and continuing to get educated in the field. – Mrs. Shavon Meyers.
Q: What does a typical day look like for you at your job? How has your role evolved since you first started? What skills do you think are the most essential for success in your profession? What do you find most fulfilling about your current position?
A typical day would be reviewing chart and resources for a client. I have been involved in the management role in counseling for about 4 to 5-years. Engaging in self-care is really important and keeping updated with the techniques is essential. I like that the counseling/psychology field has many different facets where you can explore many areas and work in many places and populations. For me this keeps my interest and I will never get bored. – Mrs. Shavon Meyers.
Q: Do you have any role models or people you look up to? Who would you consider a mentor or someone who has guided you in your career?

Q: What has been one of the most difficult decision you’ve had to make in life, and how did you overcome it? How about an experience that made you change the way you see the world? What has helped you grow the most?
The most difficult decision that I had to make was to leave home and venture out on my own. I had trust in myself to overcome fear and anxiety but knew I had basic knowledge to survive through engaging with others. Earlier in my career as an outpatient therapist I started seeing clients in their homes and witness how the system can fail individuals and how some people feel that they cannot get out of poverty, which creates this vicious cycle. I had to understand that I couldn’t save everyone but did the best I could and left it up to the individual to pull their own weight to help themselves. I had to learn that it is okay to walk away from situations that are not fully resolved as long as I did my part. I had to learn to emotionally detach at times with my clients and their families to better serve them and remain professional. – Mrs. Shavon Meyers.
Q: How would you define success, and do you believe you can reach success despite bad grades? Would you say it’ll be a more difficult experience than others with a good education? What role does having an education play on an individual’s future?
Success if defined by ones ability to be resilient, strong-willed and ambitious. Successes not define perfection but understanding how the imperfections make us unique and helps us learn a lesson. Bad grades do not determine success always. I believe bad grades indicate what changes do we need to make improvements. What is the grade saying about our performance instead of emphases on one’s ability to do well? Education provides knowledge which no one can take away. We have access to resources, stories and history that explain and outline the future. – Mrs. Shavon Meyers.
Q: What keeps you grounded? How do you keep a balance between your job and your personal life? If you could change one thing about your life path, would you, and what would it be?
I have learned to set boundaries with myself and with my co-workers as well as clients and patients. I remember that I wear different hats and that each environment requires me to take one off to put one on. I wouldn’t change anything about my path because it is my own personal journey. – Mrs. Shavon Meyers.
Q: What has been the biggest lesson or learning experience in your career/profession so far? How do you stay motivated in your work, especially when working with a team, or when experiencing tough times?
I have learned to stay grounded and not take things personal. I have learned that I do not know everything and that is okay. Being willing to learn and getting over a learning curve has allowed me to grow professionally and personally. – Mrs. Shavon Meyers.
Q: What advice would you give someone considering entering your field of work? What are some common misconceptions people have about your profession? What personal qualities do you believe have helped you succeed in your profession?
The best advice that I can give someone entering my field is get to know yourself in order to help others. Some people feel that in the counseling field it is all about listening to others. Psychology and the mental health field is all about listening to understand your client and then applying knowledge to help. The qualities that I have used to be successful in the mental health field is taking a unique perspective by understanding the individual I am working with instead of applying techniques and resources out of a textbook. – Mrs. Shavon Meyers.
Q: What changes do you see in your industry, and how are you preparing for them? Do you have any goals for the future? Where do you see yourself in your career in the next 5-10 years?
The changes I am seeing are that multiculturalism is being considered in the techniques used as we manage and deal with a more diverse population. I see myself engaging in more outreach. – Mrs. Shavon Meyers.
Q: Can you share a story where your job made a positive impact on someone or your community? What are you most passionate about?
My job made a positive impact on someone in my community by making sure that they got the services that they needed for addiction and then they were able to return to a lower level of care. I am passionate about helping others reach their goals. – Mrs. Shavon Meyers.
