The winners of the 129th Boston Marathon were Sharon Lokedi of Kenya, John Korir of Kenya, Marcel Hug of Switzerland, and Susannah Scaroni of the US.

Sharon Lokedi, a Kansas alum representing Kenya, won the 2025 Boston Marathon with a record-breaking time of 2:17:22 in the professional women’s division that Monday Morning. This secured her second World Marathon major victory. After crossing the finish line, she shattered the previous course record of 2:19:59 set by Buzunesh Deba in 2014. Lokedi went home with a cash prize of $150,000, with an additional $50,000 for the course record.

John Korir, a 28 year old representing Kenya, won the 2025 Boston Marathon in the professional men’s division with a time of 2:04:44 – the second-fastest winning time in race history. Wesley Korir, his brother, won the race back in 2012 with a time of 2:05:04. Korir went home with $150,000 in prize money.

Marcel Hug, a Paralympic champion representing Switzerland, won the 2025 Boston Marathon in the men’s wheelchair division with a time of 1:21:34. This will mark his 8th win in the Boston Marathon. Hug went home with $50,000 in prize money.
Susannah Scaroni, a U of I alum and Paralympic champion, representing the United States, won the 2025 Boston Marathon in the women’s wheelchair division, with a time of 1:35:20. Scaroni went home with $50,000 in prize money.
Boston Marathon

The Boston Marathon is a famous running race that happens every year in Boston, Massachusetts. It began in 1897 as a local event, and is one of the oldest and most important marathons in the whole world. Several thousands of people from all over the globe come to run and cheer on the athletes. An average race time ranges from under 4 hours, to over 5 hours. Costs include a registration fee is $375, as well as passing the qualifications to enter.
How much do contestants get?:
Women’s/men’s prize money:
1st place: $150,000
2nd place: $75,000
3rd place: $40,000
Wheelchair women’s/men’s prize money:
1st place: $50,000
2nd place: $30,000
3rd place: $15,000
All do have to pay federal and state taxes after receiving the money, so they will not earn all of the prize money.
