Mother’s Day. A day to celebrate mothers and all they do for their family and contribute to the world. In the United States, Americans celebrate this day on the second Sunday of March. This year it falls on March 11. Other countries like Aruba, Australia, and Barbados celebrate on this date as well. However, not every country celebrates on this day. It may vary.
Mother’s Day is said to have come from a custom in the Middle Ages where people would travel to their home church and visit their mother. This day was called Laetare Sunday. This brought on Mothering Sunday in Britain, and in modern society it is now Mother’s Day. The person who originated the holiday is Anna Jarvis.
The holiday is celebrated because where would we be if not for others? Nowhere is the correct answer! These are the women who give us life. But don’t be confused, Mother’s Day isn’t just for the biological mothers out there. A mother doesn’t have to be related in blood to guide someone and impact their life.
Not everyone in the world has their biological mother in their family. But that’s okay. A family doesn’t have to have a direct relation to that person, it is who you love and care for that matters.
So maybe you have a mother, or maybe you have a different role model in your life. This Mother’s Day, show the person that you consider a loved one or a mother that they mean a lot to you. This can come in the form of a gift like jewelry, flowers, and candy, or by having a heartfelt conversation with them, writing them a poem, or cooking them dinner. The goal is just show your appreciation for the person in your life you admire.
