During this interview, you will not only get to know Calli, a Highlander here at Doherty Memorial High School, but also gain insight into how inflation has impacted her cookie business and how she tackles those challenges. Calli’s Background
Q: Tell me about your background.
“I have always grown up in Worcester. I was born October 6th, 2010. I speak and understand English, Spanish, and Polish.” – Calli.
Q: What do you like to do in your free time? Do you have any hobbies, passions, video games, or special interests? What’s a fun or unique fact about you?
“I love basketball and I have played my whole life. I also love to bake and this is why I am starting this hobby.” – Calli.
Q: Did you join any extracurriculars, after school clubs, organizations, programs, or sports in the past? Are you currently in any?
“I am a part of a basketball team for a city in Massachusetts.” – Calli.
Q: Do you have any work, community work, or internship experiences you want to share with us?
“I help out at my church.” – Calli.
Q: Do you have any favorite teachers, fellow Highlanders or other staff members here at DMHS that you’d like to mention?
“I would like to thank Mrs. Gagne and Ms. Alejandro for encouraging me to do what I wanted.” – Calli.
Q: What are your plans after you graduate? Do you have any goals for the future? Where do you see yourself in the next 5-10 years?
“I want to attend a 4 year college and go into criminology/criminal psychology.” – Calli.
Q: What were some challenges you had to overcome during High School? Any advice to fellow Highlander’s?
“Just try your best and be kind.” – Calli.

“If you don’t like something, change it. If you can’t change it, change your attitude.” – Maya Angelou.

Q: Tell me a bit about your business. What is the name of your brand/business? How do you promote your business?
“Cookies by Calli. I promote my business by telling my friends and others.” – Calli.
Q: How did you come up with your business? What inspired you? Do you have any role models you look up to?
“I wanted to focus on something new to take my mind off of things and I find joy in baking.” – Calli.
Q: Describe a moment where you felt discouraged. What was a challenge you had faced? What sort of steps did you take to keep your business growing?
“Inflation on ingredients have gone way up that I almost stopped a few times but people wanted more cookies so I had to keep going.” – Calli.
Q: How do you handle criticism and feedback from customers? What steps do you take to improve your business?
“I try to hear them out and get truthful feedback from my customers. If they do say something that I could work on, I try my best to fix it.” – Calli.
Q: What new projects are you excited to work on and sell?
“I’m thinking of making cake pops and some other things as well.” – Calli.
Q: What has been the most rewarding part of being a business owner? How do you manage to keep a balance between schoolwork and completing orders?
“I make sure I have set enough time to balance in between school and baking by trying to do as much school work as I can during school hours.” – Calli.
