This new month of September is a month in which brings people together to discuss about the topics of suicide.
Suicide, known as the process of self-killing, has been a struggle more popular in younger groups. Some even commit suicide at the age of 4.
According to the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) over 49,000 people died by suicide in the U.S in 2023. That’s 1 death every 11 minutes. 12.8 million people have thought about committing suicide seriously. 3.7 million people made a plan. And 1.5 million people attempted suicide.
In 2023, there were studies for which ethnic groups/races had the highest rates of committing suicide.
The suicide rate among males in 2023 was approximately four times higher than the rate among females. Males make up 50% of the population but nearly 80% of successful suicides.
People ages 85 and older had the highest rates of suicide in 2023.
Firearms are the most common method used in suicides. Firearms were used in more than 50% of suicides in 2023.
This is only from 2023. Imagine the years before, and our current year of 2025.
September being Suicide Awareness month helps bring awareness to such a sensitive topic that is often steered away.
If you personally struggle with suicidal thoughts, call 988 (the national suicide hotline) or 911 (emergency services). You do not burden anybody with your struggles. You are not alone. And you will be okay.
