National Hispanic Heritage Month is a vibrant celebration of the history, culture, and incredible contributions of people with roots in Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central and South America! From September 15th to October 15th, the U.S. takes time to honor the achievements of Hispanic and Latino Americans who have helped shape our nation in powerful and inspiring ways. It all began back in 1968 as a week-long celebration, started by Representative George Brown Jr. and signed into law by President Lyndon B. Johnson. Later, in 1988, it grew into a full month from the efforts of Representative Esteban Torres and Senator Paul Simon, with President Ronald Reagan signing it into law and officially making it a national observance month. The celebration kicks off on September 15th to recognize the independence days of El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Mexico on the 16th, and Chile on the 18th.
