As Halloween creeps ever closer and shadows stretch a little longer, what better way to summon the spirit of the season than with chilling tales from the depths of folklore? Stories etched in whispers, wrapped in fear, and cloaked in mystery. In the fourth installment of our spine-tingling folklore series, we delve into one of America’s most terrifying urban legends, the blood-curdling tale of Bloody Mary, also known as Hell Mary. Dare to say her name three times… if you’re brave enough.
The Legend
At its core, the Bloody Mary legend centers around a ghost — sometimes a witch, a wrongly executed woman, or a murder victim, who can be summoned by chanting her name three times (or more) in front of a mirror, usually in a dimly lit or candle-lit room.
The Ritual
Stand in front of a mirror (often in a bathroom)
Turn off the lights
Light a candle (optional, but classic)
Say “Bloody Mary” three times (some versions say 13 times)

Possible Origins
There are several theories about who Bloody Mary was:
1. Mary I of England (“Bloody Mary”)
The real-life Queen Mary I (1516–1558) earned the nickname “Bloody Mary” for her persecution of Protestants.
Some believe the legend is loosely inspired by her tragic life: her phantom pregnancies, false hopes of heirs, and violent reign.
2. A Witch or Wronged Woman
In many versions, Bloody Mary is a woman who was accused of witchcraft and executed.
Other tales suggest she was a mother who lost her child and went mad.
Some say she was murdered in front of a mirror, hence her spirit is trapped inside it.
3. A Cautionary Tale
Like many urban legends, this story may have served as a way to teach children lessons about bravery, peer pressure, or the consequences of dabbling with the supernatural.
