Halloween. What do you think of when you hear that word? Scary? Haunted? Dark? Purple, orange, black, or red? Well, as amazing as this fright-filled holiday truly is, it is also a day to have fun and joke around. Halloween is the one day of the year that people of all ages dress up in costumes, stepping out of societal roles and themselves.
But let’s be honest, Halloween can be very expensive. So while you can shop on Amazon or Walmart, or any party store, you might not have or want to spend that money that comes along with the epic costume. Now, Halloween is about the fun, so why have to worry about the money when you could just make your costume at home and save yourself some money with a DIY costume.
Do it yourself is exactly what it seems. You literally make the costume! There are endless amounts of costumes you could choose from but a humorous one is the Minions.
Here’s what you’ll need:
- Tu-tu or jeans (any type of pants, preferably blue because it goes along with the minions and how they dress)
- Ribbon (any color)
- Tape, glue, clips or stapples
- Scissors
- Black face paint or marker
- Optional: Yellow face paint
- Yellow t-shirt or white t-shirt (if you don’t have this any color will do)
If you don’t already have the supplies you can find them at the dollar tree.
First, put on the clothes. An iconic minion has a yellow body, blue overalls, and suspenders. So, pick your pants. It could be overalls and this wouldn’t require the making of suspenders but it’s not necessary. So you could wear a blue tu-tu, jeans, leggings, shorts, anything. Next, get your shirt on. It could just be a long sleeve or t-shirt if you’re more of a hot blooded person. Either color yellow or white would match the blue so pick which one you already have if that’s easier.
Now: the suspenders. Suspenders go over your body from the front of your pants till the back. With ribbon we can recreate this. First, measure how long it is from the stomach area of your pants all the way over your shoulder, till the beginning of where your pants start. Next, cut the two pieces that will go on the right and left of your body over both shoulders. Seen in the list for number three, there are countless objects to hold the ribbon in place. Pick which ever one you want to use. Once you stick the ribbon on the inner side of your pants, pull the ribbon over your shoulder to stick onto the inner side of your backside (of the pants).
Makeup time! Minions are known for their glasses. Typically you see the minions will one eye or two, since we humans have two we are going to draw two eye glasses lenses. Using your black face paint or marker (if you want to paint your face yellow do that before drawing glasses) in the middle of your eyebrows draw a straight line. Proceed to loop that line into a circle around your eye to make a circle around your eyebrow plus your eye and eyelid. Do this to both eyes. Once this is complete, draw an extending line from the eye to finish off the glasses, repeat this on both sides. The lines should connect to the side of your head where your hairline starts.
And TA-DA!!! If you follow all the steps correctly you should now look like a minion. With an added factor to your style, do your hair, add hair accessories, but on stockings, shoes, anything that will make your minion more like you.
