Doherty Memorial High School opened its doors in the fall of 1966, replacing two older Worcester high schools, Worcester Classical High School and Worcester Commerce High School.
The school was named after Dr. Leo T. Doherty, a longtime educator in Worcester who worked as a teacher, art director, and assistant superintendent, his legacy shaped the school’s identity.
Over time, Doherty became known not just for academics but also for its spirit, the “Highlanders” mascot, traditionally having a graduate play bagpipes at school events, spirit week, and strong athletic teams.
One highlight that was somewhat recently was in 2013, when the Doherty football team won the Massachusetts Division 4 state championship.
In 2024, after more than 50 years in the old building, Doherty closed it and opened a brand new facility. The new building has modern features, updated academic wings, music rooms and better technology.
Alumni remember the old building with fondness, the close communities, memorable teachers, and how everyone felt connected.
