The Anime Club at Doherty Memorial High School is a welcoming and vibrant space where students come together to celebrate their love of anime and manga. It’s a place to connect with fellow fans, share favorite shows and characters, explore Japanese culture, and build lasting friendships.
What is an Anime Club?
An Anime Club is a student organization where people who enjoy anime (Japanese animated shows and movies) and manga (Japanese comics) can come together to share their interests.
In an anime club, members usually:
-
Watch anime together and discuss episodes or movies.
-
Talk about favorite characters and series, sharing opinions and recommendations.
-
Read or trade manga and other related media.
-
Create art, fanfiction, or videos inspired by anime.
-
Participate in events or cosplay, sometimes at school or local conventions.
Essentially, it’s a fun and welcoming space for fans to connect, share, and celebrate Japanese pop culture while making new friends.
Who Can Join?
Anyone with an interest in anime, manga, or Japanese pop culture is welcome! Whether you’re a longtime fan or just curious to learn more, the Anime Club is open to all students. No experience or prior knowledge is needed, just bring your enthusiasm and love for stories, art, and community. There’s a common misconception that joining an anime club might make you a target for teasing, but the reality is very different. Who cares about what others think, focus on what makes you happy.

Quick Interview:
Here’s a quick interview with Doherty’s Anime Club advisor Ms. Bunker:
Q. “How has Doherty’s Anime Club evolved or grown since it first started?”
The Anime Club has grown a lot over the years. It’s a relaxed and welcoming space where anyone with an interest in anime or manga can feel comfortable joining. Members are free to participate as much or as little as they want there’s no pressure to be an expert or to attend every meeting.
Q. “How do members of the club get to express their creativity; whether through art, cosplay, discussions, or other activities?”
So without direction, the Anime Club focuses a lot on creative and artistic expression. Members have worked on projects like making keychains, designing posters, and even creating original characters inspired by anime, allowing everyone to showcase their own unique style and personality.
Q. “Is the club currently involved in any fundraising efforts?”
Right now, the club is working on creating a mascot for a T-shirt and organizing a trivia event, both as part of a fun fundraiser to support club activities.
