After an impressive 35-year career in education, Mr. Ramirez, a beloved history teacher at Doherty Memorial High School, is officially retiring. His journey as a dedicated educator, spanning over three decades, has touched the lives of countless students, leaving a legacy of passion, care, and commitment to learning.
Mr. Ramirez, a proud member of the Auburn High School Class of 1982, went on to earn his Bachelor’s degree in History from Worcester State University, followed by a Master’s in Education from the same institution. With over 33 years at Doherty, he has been a cornerstone of the history department, teaching not only U.S. History but also Latin American History and Sociology. His love for the subject was inspired by early teachers in middle school, who fostered a deep interest in history, geography, and current events.
“I was influenced by great teachers early on, and my love of traveling also allowed me to learn about different cultures and places. I’ve always been fascinated by history,” Mr. Ramirez shared. His enthusiasm for teaching has made him a standout figure at Doherty, especially in his AP U.S. History classes, where he brought history to life for students year after year.
When asked about his fondest memories in the classroom, Mr. Ramirez humbly responded, “There are way too many to top a single one out.” His impact, however, is unmistakable – not just as a teacher but as a mentor who cared deeply for his students, always striving to provide guidance beyond the classroom.
In his retirement, Mr. Ramirez is looking forward to relaxing and traveling. His first destination? A sun-filled week in the Dominican Republic.
Mr. Ramirez leaves behind words of advice for his students: “Life’s a journey, not a destination. Make good choices along the way, balance your goals with enjoyment, and prioritize your physical and mental health.” His guidance has always been more than academic; he encouraged students to strive for balance in all aspects of their lives.
When asked how it feels to be considered one of the top history teachers in the district, Mr. Ramirez offered a humble and funny response: “It’s not that hard. You just have to stick around and wait for people to leave the profession and you move up the seniority ladder.”
While Mr. Ramirez’s wit and humor will be missed, it’s his genuine care for his students that will leave the greatest void at Doherty. His presence in the classroom has been invaluable, and his impact will be felt for years to come.
As he embarks on this new chapter of his life, Mr. Ramirez leaves behind a legacy of excellence and dedication. We wish him all the best in his well-deserved retirement, and we thank him for his years of service, guidance, and unwavering support for the Doherty community.
Best wishes, Mr. Ramirez! You will be missed more than words can say.
