The Highlanders Herald is thrilled to celebrate the outstanding achievements of four exceptional students from Doherty Memorial High School’s acclaimed Madrigals program, who recently participated in the prestigious Central District Festival Chorus held at Mechanics Hall in Worcester. These students not only represent the spirit of Doherty’s dedication to the arts but have also earned recognition for their remarkable talents.
Jovani: A Journey of Dedication and Passion
Jovani has been captivating audiences with his voice since a young age, singing at Elm Park and May Street before continuing his journey at Forest Grove. His passion and persistence led him to successfully audition for the Doherty Madrigals as a freshman, and his performance at the Central District Festival was nothing short of inspiring. For Jovani, the experience was eye-opening, giving him the chance to perform within the powerful dynamics of a large chorus—a moment that will undoubtedly shape his future as a singer.
Steven: A Musical Visionary with a Bright Future

Steven’s journey began at a very young age, with an exceptional gift for the piano and a love for singing that has only deepened over the years. His musical foundation was laid at Tatnuck Magnet Elementary School and Forest Grove, and he has been a consistent and dedicated member of the Jazz Band since his freshman year. Steven’s audition for the Central District Festival marked a significant milestone in his musical career. His outstanding performance earned him an All State recommendation and a coveted spot in the All State Festival Chorus, where he will perform at Symphony Hall in March. Steven’s excitement about meeting other talented musicians from across Central Massachusetts highlights his enthusiasm for further growth in the world of music.
John: A Multi-Talented Musician with Ambition

John’s musical journey started on the Alto Saxophone in fourth grade at Lakeview Elementary. He continued to grow as a musician at Forest Grove and later joined the Performing Arts Department at Doherty Memorial. John’s remarkable versatility was on display when he successfully auditioned for both the Jazz Band and the Central District Festival, showcasing his musical talents as both an Alto Saxophonist and a singer. As a bass in the Festival Chorus, John was thrilled to meet and collaborate with exceptional performers from across the region. With a desire to continue his success, John hopes to return next year and further his musical ambitions.
Sam: Overcoming Obstacles to Achieve Excellence
Sam’s journey into music began in third grade at May Street School. Although he missed out on choral singing during remote learning at Forest Grove, Sam’s dedication never wavered. He auditioned for the Doherty Madrigals as a sophomore and has now entered his third year with the group. This year marked Sam’s second audition for the Central District Festival, and his performance at Mechanics Hall was a testament to his growth as a musician. Sam has found a true sense of community and camaraderie in the Madrigals, and the high level of singing at the Festival only strengthened his passion for the art.
These four students have not only excelled individually, but they’ve also brought pride to the Doherty Memorial High School community. The Madrigals, directed by John Delorey, continue to shine as a cornerstone of the Performing Arts Program at Doherty, providing students with opportunities for growth, performance, and collaboration. Their participation in the Central District Festival Chorus is a reflection of their hard work, dedication, and love for music.
The Highlanders Herald congratulates Jovani, Steven, John, and Sam on their incredible achievements and looks forward to following their continued success in the future!
