Jailene Matias, Staff Writer
Hey Highlanders! My name is Jailene, and I’m so excited to share a little about myself with all of you.
I’m a senior at Doherty Memorial High School, and as a proud Dominican and Puerto Rican, my culture plays a huge part in who I am. I’m the kind of person who’s always paying attention to the world around me—whether it’s noticing the smallest details in a room or picking up on the latest trends in the news. Being observant helps me stay connected to what matters most, which is why I’ve always had a deep passion for history and English. There’s something about understanding the past and crafting stories with words that just clicks for me.
When I’m not in the classroom or in the library, you can probably find me curled up with a good book or in the kitchen baking something delicious. Reading allows me to dive into new worlds and ideas, and baking? Well, it’s the perfect creative outlet where I get to mix flavors and experiment with new recipes.
This year, I decided to give journalism a try, and let me tell you—I’m loving every second of it! Writing for the school paper has opened my eyes to the power of storytelling and giving people the news they need to know. I’m beyond excited to bring the best, most interesting coverage to our Highlander community and keep you all informed. Whether it’s a big event or the small moments that make our school special, I can’t wait to share them with you.
Stay tuned for what’s to come—I promise you won’t want to miss it!
