On the morning of January 18th, Worcester State University hosted the 31st Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Youth Breakfast, a vibrant and inspiring event that celebrated the life and legacy of Dr. King. The event brought together members of the Worcester community, including city officials, students, teachers, parents, and notable alumni of Worcester State University. This year’s breakfast, organized by the Worcester State Upward Bound Program, was filled with moving performances, special recognitions, and an outpouring of community spirit.
As the Mistress of Ceremony for the occasion, I had the distinct honor of co-hosting with Isaiah Giblin, a senior from Shepherd Hill Regional High School. Together, we guided the event with enthusiasm and gratitude as we acknowledged the incredible contributions of local youth and community leaders. The morning was full of hope and celebration, as we reflected on Dr. King’s commitment to service and equality.
One of the most exciting moments of the event was the amazing performance by the Burncoat High School Spirit Team. Their energetic and passionate display set the tone for the morning, captivating the audience and spreading a contagious sense of excitement.

Throughout the event, there were several powerful speeches, including a deeply moving address by Elli Kradetska. Elli, who received the Martin Luther King Jr. Community Service Award, spoke poignantly about the importance of keeping global conflicts, such as the war in Ukraine, in the public consciousness. She emphasized that the world must not forget the suffering of those in conflict zones and urged everyone to continue advocating for peace and justice. Elli’s speech was a true highlight, especially as she was honored with a key to the city by Mayor Joseph Petty, recognizing her exceptional contributions to the community.
Another impactful speech was delivered by Senator Robyn Kennedy, who inspired the audience with her words on service, unity, and the ongoing work needed to build a more just society.

The event also featured a raffle table run by the Worcester State Upward Bound Program, where guests had the chance to win beautiful baskets. All proceeds went toward supporting the program’s efforts to provide college visits for youth in the area, helping to open doors for young people and giving them a tangible connection to their future educational aspirations.
The event included uplifting performances, such as the stunning voice of Vanessa Ford, whose musical talents created a perfect backdrop for the day’s theme of unity. Additionally, the Refugees & Immigrants Cultural Empowerment organization presented a powerful performance that captivated the audience and underscored the importance of cultural understanding and inclusion.

Throughout the breakfast, numerous awards were presented to outstanding youth leaders and community members who embody the spirit of service and commitment that Dr. King championed. Anthony Barbosa was honored with the Martin Luther King Jr. Youth Service Award, while Elli Kradetska received the Martin Luther King Jr. Community Service Award. Both individuals were presented with a key to the city by Worcester Mayor Joe Petty, a gesture recognizing their exceptional contributions to the community.
The morning also showcased an incredible performance by the Jo Ann Warren Studio, adding an artistic flair to the celebration. As part of the event’s tradition, scholarships were awarded to deserving students, including the MLK Jr. Breakfast Scholarship recipients Doaa Mutar and Jennaveve, both students at Worcester State University. Additionally, the Olivia Rochelle Spencer Memorial Scholarships were given to Anglea Nabakka and Roy Karanja, with Roy also being celebrated as an alumni of Doherty High School and a member of the Doherty football team.

One of the most heartwarming moments of the event was the recognition of poetry from the MLK Poetry Contest. Both myself and Doherty Senior Dea Kamberi were awarded for our poems, which reflected on the themes of justice, peace, and the ongoing work of Dr. King’s vision for equality.
The energy of the audience throughout the morning was absolutely spectacular, and it was a reminder of the incredible strength and potential of Worcester’s young people. As everyone came together to enjoy the breakfast and celebrate the talents and achievements of the youth and community members in attendance, we were reminded of the vital role that each of us plays in shaping a better world.
I am incredibly proud of all the award winners and the impactful contributions they are making to our community. The 31st Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Youth Breakfast was not just a tribute to Dr. King’s legacy, but a testament to the future of Worcester—a future shaped by service, unity, and a commitment to justice.
