Whether you’re reading this interview for new songs to jam too, or you’re just feeling curious today, I can guarantee you you’ll learn about a new perspective on music with Nicole’s responses!
Q: What made you pick this album to review?
NICOLE: “I chose this album because it features some of his most popular songs like Sweet Boy, Roommates, and Art House.”
Q: What do you specifically like about this album?
NICOLE: “Something I love about this album is how fun it is. All the songs have so many similarities with how they sound instrument wise, but each song’s lyrics have so much uniqueness to them with its themes of missing an ex, troubled relationships, and young love being all-consuming, intense, and confusing. It really makes this album one of my favorites.”
Q: Does this album mean anything to you personally?
NICOLE: “Personally no, it’s just always been my go to for any mood I’m in whether that is cleaning around the house or just laying in bed before going to sleep.”
Q: How did you first find out about this album?
NICOLE: “I’m a huge fan of art and animatics. I was scrolling through watching random ones and “Roommates” was playing in the background. I really liked the snippet I heard, looked up the artist and listened to a couple more songs. Later after I found him he dropped his first album and I listened to it on repeat.”

Nicole continues to tell us about Todd’s journey getting to where he is at the moment. “Malcolm Todd was only in highschool when he began to write music and promote it on TikTok,” she states. After high school, Todd released his first EP, “Demos Before Prom“, and chose to pursue music after gaining views and attention. The musician released the “Sweet Boy” album on April 4, 2024 including 7 music videos and 9 visualizers. People might know him for his song “Chest Pain (I Love)”.
Q: Describe the genre of this album.
NICOLE: “Sweet Boy is often described as alternative R&B blended with jazz-pop and indie. His music is very heavily inspired by artists like Steve Lacy, Smino, and Dominik Fike.”
Q: Describe the sound of this album.
NICOLE: “Sweet Boy has such an upbeat and funky tone it’s almost hard to tell the album’s undertone in its lyrics. There’s guitar loops and funk infused beats with repetitive and catchy lyrics that really tie it all together.”
Q: What emotions does this album convey? Are there any hidden messages?
NICOLE: “The emotion the album conveys is heartache and missing an ex while also trying to find your way through loving someone while still being young and naive. While there are no hidden messages it’s easy to overlook the themes of certain songs because of how catchy the music and vocals are.”
Q: How does this album make you feel?
NICOLE: “This album makes me feel so inspired. I love listening to it while story building and drawing because of the mood it puts me in. It’s an album that brings me comfort and will forever be one of my favorites.”

Q: What’s a lyric that stuck out to you?
“Her love is in your head,
You lost your earrings in her bed,
You couldn’t tell her that you lost ’em,
‘Cause you’re scared and you’re not talking”
NICOLE: “These lyrics stuck to me because this is the opening chorus to the first song in the album. Malcolm explains in an interview that this song was way after his breakup with his lover but it was his way of getting out every last emotion that stuck with him from it.”
Q: What’s a track that stuck out to you?
NICOLE: “My favorite song from the track and my favorite song in general has to be “Art House”. It’s so much different from the rest of the songs in the album, the only one I can really compare to is “Thailand”. The instruments are so much more emotional as well as his voice when he sings. He’s experiencing pain from his lover and therefore cannot love them the same.”
Q: What’s your least favorite track?
NICOLE: “Personally, my least favorite track is “Rockstar Boyfriend“. It’s probably the song I’ve listened to the least but it just doesn’t grab my attention like the rest of his songs.”
Q: Describe the mood of this album.
NICOLE: “I would say that the mood is confused. It feels like Malcolm is struggling to grasp his way through this breakup and he’s not exactly sure how to express it. He’s found love through his friends and his music but that isn’t enough. He’s still young but all these emotions hit him over and over again.”
Q: What do you think about while listening to this album?
NICOLE: “As an enjoyer of art, something I often think about is characters I create and making up stories with the songs. Music is a great way to get inspired and test out certain storylines, especially songs with fun music.”

Q: Do you have any criticisms of this album? If you do, please explain.
NICOLE: “My only criticism is that I would like it if he put new songs out on the album instead of just placing his most popular songs into one place.”
Q: How do you think this album affects the artist’s “brand”?
NICOLE: “I think this album affects Malcolm’s brand because it sets the tone for his music in general. That music is what makes him popular, it’s what people like to hear, so when he tries to step out of the comfort zone of his music it gets less traction than some of his older songs.”
Q: Rate the vocals on this album 1-10 and why.
NICOLE: “I will give Malcolm’s vocals an 8.5, obviously his vocals aren’t shocking to hear, but for someone his age that doesn’t mean talent lacks, I love hearing his voice and listening to him sing high energy songs, he has the perfect voice for it.”
Q: Rate the sound and production quality on this album 1-10 and why.
NICOLE: “I’m giving the sound and production an easy 9, again it’s not like the music is the most beautiful thing I’ve heard ever, but for production, Malcolm and his friends make all the background music and vocals. It’s very obvious that he’s passionate about what he makes and publishes.”
Q: What are the albums weaknesses? Strengths?
NICOLE: “Its weakness is definitely the repetitiveness after a while. I could probably recite every song on this album by heart, but it doesn’t mean that every once in a while I won’t be tired of hearing the same songs over and over.”

Q: Do you think people of your age group would be interested in this album?
NICOLE: “If you are a fan of artists like Steve Lacy and Dominik Fike, I think that you’ll definitely like this album and hear the similarities between their music. It’s also possible that you’ve heard his songs before and have just never realized who was singing it.”
