Meet the Woman Behind Doherty’s Leadership

Have you ever thought of pursuing Education, Biology, or even Social and Rehabilitation Services? What comes to your mind when you think of the “American Dream?” Do you consider yourself having a strong commitment towards your work or find yourself wondering the deeper meaning behind any challenges that come your way? If so, say hello to assistant principal Ms. Katerina Kambosos–a proud first‑generation American whose leadership is rooted in her Greek heritage and the values she learned growing up in a family business, witnessing “firsthand the sacrifice and commitment required to achieve the American Dream.”

Here at Doherty Memorial High School, she brings that same dedication, empathy, and drive to her role as assistant principal, working every single day to ensure students feel supported, safe, and capable of achieving their own goals. As we have wrapped up celebrating Women’s History Month last month, we continue to share reminders that strong, resilient women shape our school community every day. To learn more about one of the important women behind Doherty’s leadership, continue reading her story in true detail and the advice she has to offer below.

“I majored in biology and minored in social and rehabilitation services from Assumption College. I was in the process of applying to graduate school and started to work as a paraprofessional in 2000 which then led me to where I am currently. I worked at Doherty for 18 years, having different roles (science teacher, AVID teacher/AVID coordinator, and action plan facilitator, field hockey coach). In November of 2018, I was asked to take on an opportunity as an acting assistant principal at Sullivan Middle School until the end of that school year. I then went to Claremont Academy as one of the assistant principals from 2019 to 2024. I then applied for the position at Doherty and was able to transition with everyone to the new building for the start of the 2024-2025 school year. I have been working for the WPS since the fall of 2000.” — Ms. Katerina Kambosos.

“As I tell students and families, everything I do and everything I say fall into two buckets: Education and Safety. Our job is to ensure an environment that keeps all staff and students safe. In addition, it is our duty to provide the best education. My day begins in the 2nd-floor cafeteria before school starts. Then it may be that I am meeting with students or caregivers. Weekly I have meetings with different support staff to look at data to discuss interventions, next steps, and how to best support students. I appreciate going into classrooms and observing all the great things teachers are providing and all the great ways students are learning. At approximately 10:40, we have lunch duty. I take advantage of this time to check in with students, remind students of some goals they may have set. This is my opportunity to get to know students. I end my day in front of the school ensuring we have safe dismissal and assisting students in finding their bus with the support of Mr. Staley and Dr. Razzaq.” — Ms. Katerina Kambosos.

“A challenge I may face in school leadership is maintaining a consistent balance while providing support to staff and students. Everyday is a new day. You are constantly trying to problem-solve, and it is important to communicate effectively and offer meaningful support to all. I try to overcome the challenges of this role by having a dedicated support team of colleagues who are exceptional listeners and offer sound advice. By surrounding myself with people who believe that students are the heart of every decision, we ensure that every action we take is in their best interest. Grateful for Mr. Staley, Dr. Razzaq, Mr. Bowler, Mr. Capstick, Mr. Whalen, the C311 WonderWomen and all the staff that support me everyday.” — Ms. Katerina Kambosos.
