Totó La Momposina–born Sonia Bazanta Vides in 1940 in Talaigua Nuevo–stands as one of the most influential voices in Colombian folk music. Rooted in Afro‑Colombian and Indigenous traditions, she carried the sounds of the Caribbean coast to global stages, blending cumbia, bullerengue, porro, mapalé, and other ancestral rhythms into a powerful artistic identity. As her children wrote, “Totó was a woman who, with her voice and extraordinary dedication, brought the culture and memory of the Colombian people to all corners of the world.” Her life’s work was shaped by deep cultural memory and rigorous study of it. Raised in a family of musicians spanning generations, she learned the rhythms of the cantadoras, traveled village to village researching traditional forms, and later refined her craft at the Sorbonne. Her career blossomed internationally after accompanying Gabriel García Márquez to the 1982 Nobel Prize ceremony and releasing La Candela Viva (1993), the album that brought her worldwide acclaim. “Her joy, radiance, wisdom, talent, generosity… touched the lives of countless people,” her family wrote.
