Worcester resident Wilson Lam, 24, turned heads at a recent City Council meeting on May 5 when he acted out what it feels like to drive over our city’s potholes. Mimicking motorcycle bumps and swerves, Lam used humor and performance to highlight a very serious issue for drivers and residents. He said potholes have caused him “to change my tire two times,” showing how road damage is affecting everyday residents. His demonstration quickly went viral online across many platforms, especially TikTok, drawing hundreds of thousands of views and renewed attention to the city’s long‑standing road safety problems.

City officials acknowledged that Lam’s frustration reflects a much larger issue. “I see a lot of requests for speed humps, but what about the potholes?” Lam asked the council following his performance. Worcester has seen pothole reports rise from 1,751 in 2020 to nearly 4,000 in 2025, with more than 1,550 already logged in 2026. Public Works leaders explained that potholes are a symptom of aging roads, heavy traffic, and years of reactive maintenance.

They outlined a new plan to shift from chasing individual 311 complaints to repairing whole routes at once, using better materials and possibly new equipment to make repairs last longer. Lam in the past has also made 311 complaints, but felt like the city wasn’t really doing anything about it. “Actually yesterday, I was turning a corner and I almost wrecked because that corner has a huge pothole[…] that’s right by my street, so I was turning right and almost wrecked. There’s tons of potholes like that around the city, just so deep,” he explained.

Lam says he plans to keep showing up at meetings, using creative performances to push for change. Even though some members of the council seemed bewildered by his unconventional use of his two minute speaking time, some looked to get a kick out of it. “I noticed some of them were smiling, but I tried not to look at their faces,” Lam said. His viral moment that users seem to enjoy has also captured a real problem Worcester drivers face every day.

Whether the city will actually get ahead of the pothole crisis is still unclear, but Lam’s message, delivered with a comedic touch, made one thing obvious: residents want safer, smoother streets, and they want action done, stat! Tune in for more local related articles.
