Hi Highlanders!
The Highlander’s Herald is back, and we’re bringing you the hottest scoop this side of the cafeteria! February is here, which means two things: Black History Month and the realization that your New Year’s resolutions are probably already gathering dust. Seriously, 2025 is zooming by!
But let’s ditch the jokes for a sec, because this month is seriously important. Black History Month isn’t just about memorizing names and dates (though, knowing a few wouldn’t hurt)! It’s about recognizing the incredible achievements and resilience of Black people throughout history, especially considering the systemic oppression they faced.
Think about it: for generations, opportunities were deliberately denied. Black excellence wasn’t just suppressed; it was actively fought against. That’s why celebrating it now is so vital. We’re talking about giants like Martin Luther King Jr., who dreamed of a better world; Ruby Bridges, who bravely walked into history; Barack Obama, who shattered a seemingly unbreakable barrier; and countless others who paved the way for progress.
And it’s not just about the big names in the history books. Black History Month is also about recognizing the contributions of Black individuals right here in our own community. Speaking of which, let’s give a shout-out to Wadeline Jonathas, a 2016 graduate who showed amazing qualities during their time here! She now is a track and field athlete and an Olympic Gold Medalist. Ms. Jonathas represented the United States in the women’s 400 meters at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Moving on to Isaac Yiadom, a 2014 graduate who is a NFL cornerback drafted by the Denver Broncos in 2018, quite impressive! Now Isaac Yiadom is a professional football cornerback for the San Francisco 49ers. Next is Jennessa Burks, who graduated the year I was born! 2007, who is now a Worcester muralist and artist expressing herself through her artistic abilities! And let me tell you she can make beautiful murals! Within her murals they capture the beauty, strength, and resilience of BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of color.)
So, this February, let’s all take some time to learn, reflect, and celebrate Black history – not just as something that happened “back then,” but as a living, breathing part of our present and future. Let’s honor the past, celebrate the present, and build a future where Black excellence can shine even brighter.
See you next week, Highlanders!
