And just like that we are back yet again. Combined with a three for three match up, the girls basketball teams manage impressive victories to put their record up to 7 wins and 5 loses.

Playing first on Wednesday, January 21st, the Highlanders went against Quaboag. Hannah Kursonis led the girls with 12 points, Ava Egonu 11, Analia Brown 9, and Allie Soufleris with 3 plus Yareli Sanchez landing a two. An away game champ, these girls showed grit with an end score of 37-28.

Playing in their first home game of the week, on the 23rd they went against St. Bernard’s. The team put up points all around, Brown topped it off with 15 points, Kursonis and Egonu following behind both with 13. Sanchez hitting three of her threes met 9 points at the end of the night, Athanasia Angelis putting up a three as well. Key on defense as well as offense, the Highlanders additionally put up eleven more with Soufleris 2 points, Mariamah Kinteh 2, Nevaeh Harris two, and first varsity points for freshman Jolynn Daniels scoring 2 on the foul line. Joy and passion transformed into a 61-30 Friday game night.

Ending their week out on a high note with a double header, Doherty played Saturday afternoon, the 24th, against Burncoat. Brown on the charts again, she scored 13 points, Kursonis with 12 and a killer 10 rebounds, Egonu had 9 and an additional 10 rebounds. Another promising freshman in the making, Tariyah McLune had an incredible first 6 varsity points. Athanasia Angelis continued with a three and a break away layup, Sanchez with 3, and a mix of two’s all around by Isabella Llanos and Mariamah Kinteh, ending it right to put the Highlanders up 52-29.

A week full of intensity and high emotions, Doherty stuck it out to the end. The next game will be on January 30th, against St. Bernard’s a second time, playing at their court.
