Happy April Fools’ day!
Happy April Fools’ Day!
April Fools’ Day has been around for centuries, even though no one knows its exact origin. Many historians think it started when France switched from the Julian calendar to the Gregorian calendar in 1582. This change moved New Year’s Day from the end of March to January 1. People who kept celebrating the old date were teased and called “April fools.” Others believe the holiday grew out of spring festivals that encouraged playful chaos and harmless mischief.
Over time, April Fools’ Day spread across the world and became a tradition focused on lighthearted tricks. Different countries developed their own customs–like French kids sticking paper fish on people’s backs or Scotland’s “Hunt the Gowk,” where people were sent on silly errands. Eventually, newspapers, radio stations, and big companies started joining in the fun, creating elaborate hoaxes that helped turn April 1st into a global cultural event.
Some April Fools’ pranks became famous for fooling huge audiences. In 1957, the BBC aired a segment claiming spaghetti grew on trees, complete with footage of people “harvesting” noodles. In 1996, Taco Bell caused national outrage when it announced it had bought the Liberty Bell and renamed it the “Taco Liberty Bell.” Even companies like Google joined the fun, releasing yearly jokes ranging from fake inventions to hidden surprises in their apps.
Just like these classic pranks, SpongeBob SquarePants puts its own spin on April Fools’ style humor in the episode “Pranks a Lot.”
Pranks a Lot
The episode opens with SpongeBob showing Patrick the Palace of Pranks.
SpongeBob explains that he once bought a gag can of Seanut Brittle there, and Patrick immediately falls for the trick, getting upset when he realizes there’s no real snack inside.
They head into the store looking for the ultimate prank. Patrick falls for the Seanut Brittle gag again, which SpongeBob finds hilarious, before introducing him to the store owner, Frank. Frank shows them a bunch of prank items, but nothing catches their attention until he offers them a rare can of Invisible Spray for only one dollar. He warns them that it stains clothes.
SpongeBob and Patrick decide to spray a park bench and sit on it so it looks like they’re floating. But before they start, Patrick remembers the warning, so they take off their clothes to avoid staining them. They argue over who gets to spray the bench, and during the fight, they accidentally spray their clothes, making them disappear.
A passing tour bus embarrasses them, and while SpongeBob tries to find their clothes, Patrick decides to have fun and sprays SpongeBob’s right hand. SpongeBob gets annoyed and sprays Patrick’s stomach. This turns into a spray battle full of bad puns, and by the end, they’ve turned completely invisible and emptied the can.
SpongeBob tosses the can away and blames Patrick for ruining their chance at the perfect prank. After accidentally scaring a man who was just giving them the time, SpongeBob realizes that being invisible means they can pretend to be ghosts and prank the whole town.
They go around haunting everyone–moving things in Sandy’s treedome, eating Mrs. Puff’s chocolate cake, drawing a mustache on Squidward, and more. Soon, the only person left to scare is Mr. Krabs, who claims he isn’t afraid of ghosts.
They manage to spook him at first, but when they try to burn a dollar bill, Mr. Krabs’ love of money overpowers his fear. He throws water on the match, accidentally washing the invisible spray off SpongeBob and Patrick and revealing both their identities and their nudity.
Mr. Krabs forgives them and admits he used to love pranks too. But when SpongeBob and Patrick try to leave to find new clothes, they discover that nearly everyone in Bikini Bottom is inside the Krusty Krab. Mr. Krabs has turned their prank around on them, advertising “Live, nude pranksters! Starring the Bikini Bottom Ghosts!” as payback.
Everyone cheers, laughs, and takes pictures while SpongeBob and Patrick try to cover themselves in embarrassment. Before the episode ends, SpongeBob tells Patrick they should’ve just bought the whoopie cushion instead. Tune in for next years April Fools’ Day article!
