Through our winter sports season, we’ve seen success on many athletic fronts as a school. From a deep playoff run for our basketball team to our wrestlers finding success and recognition, Doherty not only held its own but set new standards. Standards that have been upheld on all fronts, with the spring season kicking off at the start of April. After weeks of captain’s practices, team meetings, tryouts, practices, and workouts, our spring season has started off very strong, with wins from all of our team sports.
Boys Volleyball kicked off their season strong with a sweeping victory over Leominster, three sets to none (3-0), on March 26. These boys went on to lose a tough match vs. a ranked opponent in an away game against the Marlborough Panthers. This team now sits with a winning record at 4-3 and is second in their league, CMAC A. “Our team has a strong core and is full of potential,” said senior captain Atticus O’Neil, who has led his team by stepping up to the role of setter and now averages 20 assists a game. Boys Volleyball hopes to improve their record and league standings on Thursday in an away game versus the Assabet Aztecs.

Girls Softball has also made an early statement this season. The Highlanders opened with a strong 6-4 win over Nipmuc and followed it up with an impressive 4-2 victory against Notre Dame. Since then, the Highlanders have fallen to AMSA and Blackstone Valley Tech in a tight 8-9 loss. While they’ve faced some tough competition early on, Doherty has shown the ability to win games and has a promising season ahead. They currently sit at 2-2 and hope to improve on Wednesday in a league matchup against Oxford.
Boys Baseball started off their season with a nailbiting loss at Tantasqua, losing 5-6. But these boys quickly turned things around with two bold statement wins over Bay Path and AMSA, 15-7 and 12-2 respectively. Doherty continued their winning baseball season at Worcester’s Polar Park, beating Burncoat 4-3 at the second-ever Worcester Public Schools tripleheader. Baseball currently has an impressive 3-2 record and hopes to improve it on Wednesday as they travel to Sutton to play a league game.
On the courts, Boys and Girls Tennis have been steadily building their seasons through competitive matches and close scoring. The boys kicked things off on March 30 at Grafton, where they lost in a tough 0-5 sweep. After this loss, the Highlanders picked themselves right back up and have since won every match, including two 5-0 victories over Southbridge and Millbury. The boys now have a strong 3-1 record and look to improve it on Wednesday as they travel to Uxbridge.
On the girls side of tennis, their first scheduled match against Grafton was canceled due to weather conditions. They went on to win their first two matches in dominant fashion, with a 4-1 victory over South, followed by a close 3-2 win over Uxbridge. This perfect record was lost after a close 2-3 match against Notre Dame. The girls are now 2-1 and seek to improve on Wednesday in a home match versus AMSA.
