Families across Colombia celebrated Día de las Velitas, also called Little Candles Day. This tradition happens every year on December 7th, the eve of the Immaculate Conception, which is a national holiday the next day.
People lit colorful candles on sidewalks, balconies, and windows to honor the Virgin Mary and mark the beginning of the Christmas season. The streets glowed with light, and families gathered to share food, sing songs, and enjoy the festive atmosphere.
Different regions had their own unique ways of celebrating. In Quimbaya, neighborhoods held lantern contests, while Bogotá closed streets so families could admire decorations and carols. In Cali, the river was beautifully illuminated, and in the Caribbean region, families woke up before dawn to light candles together.
Everywhere, the day was about family, gratitude, and the joy of Christmas starting. Happy holidays, and stay tuned for more holiday related articles.
