Doherty has seen plenty of success throughout the spring sports season and this trend has only been continued in the past two weeks. Before our April vacation our athletics saw many wins across all team sports and we hope to continue this trend as we return from hiatus.
Boys Volleyball came back from a tough loss vs. Nipmuc to create a new winning streak of three games. Firstly with a league win over Assabet (3-1) followed by a home game against Algonquin where Doherty won in a sweep (3-0). Returning from vacation the Highlanders took on the Colonels of South at home to win in four sets (3-1). They now sit at a 7-3 record with a 3-1 league record placing them in second in CMAC A. Doherty will next play Keefe Tech at home on April 29th hoping to improve their league and season record.
Following a nail-biting 8-9 loss against BVT the girls softball team fell to Oxford in another tight loss (8-9). Following this, the Lady Highlanders went on to fall against St. Paul (0-5) proceeded with another loss against Tantasqua (7-13). They currently sit at 2-6 and will next face Bay Path on the road on April 29th in a league matchup.
Boys Baseball has continued to impress after their victory over Burncoat at the second annual Worcester Public Schools triple header hosted at Polar Park. Doherty went on to best Sutton (4-1) in a league victory. The Highlanders then fell to the Mountaineers of Wachusett in a tough-fought loss (0-4). Since then they have improved with two consecutive wins over Northbridge and South; (8-7) and (9-2) respectively. Baseball now has an impressive 7-3 record and they look to continue their winning season on April 29th as they travel to Bartlett.
On the courts, Boys and Girls Tennis have been competitive in meets around the region. The boys team swept their home meet against Millbury (5-0) and have since lost two hard-fought meets against Uxbridge and Leiscter; (1-4) and (0-5) respectively. These boys are currently 3-3 and look to improve their record in a meet with Oxford at home on April 29th. They currently have a record of 3-3. On the girl’s side of the court, they’ve fallen short again in a tough loss against Auburn (0-5). Doherty girls tennis now has a record of 2-3 and will play against Blackstone-Millville in an away league matchup on April 29th.
Doherty’s outdoor track and field team has also been making waves with their recent meets. Jaden Achempong set a new school record for the Boy’s 100m, running an impressive 11.01, this time also placing him 12th in the state for 100m times. In the field events, Ayden Collins threw an outstanding 44 ‘3 in Boy’s Shotput, ranking him 4th in the school’s all time records.
