If you are wondering what Down Syndrome is, what month it is recoognized in, or other information to spread awareness about Down Syndrome, this article is for you!
First, I will start with informing you about what Down Syndrome is. Down Syndrome is a genetic condition where a person is born with an extra copy of chromosome 21, which is also called Trisomy 21. In the United States of America, about one in every 700 babies are born with Down Syndrome, and it is the most common chromosomal condition diagnosed in our country. People with Down Syndrome not only often have strong social and emotional intelligence. but can also live long, healthy, and active lives with the right support, participating in all of the normal activities others do such as go to school, work, sports, and other hobbies. Having Down Syndrome does not define a person’s personality or abilities, everyone is unique and has their own talents and interests.
Down Syndrome Awareness Month is celebrated in October every single year. This is a time to promote understanding, acceptance, and inclusion for people with Down Syndrome. The symbol often used for Down Syndrome Awareness month are three arrows or hearts, representing the extra chromosome & love, with blue and yellow as the awareness colors, including many people being supportive by wearing mismatched socks. (Although, since World Down Syndrome Day is on March 21st, many people wear those mismatched socks then too). The goal of this month is to spread kindness, end stereotypes, and help people better understand this genetic condition. To help support, families and organizations often hold different walks, fundraisers, and events to celebrate inclusion, and all of this awareness helps promote equal rights and respect for people with disabilities.
Now that you are well informed about what Down Syndrome Awareness Month is all about, you can go ahead and show your support by wearing mismatched socks or by teaching others about Down Syndrome Awareness!
