Doherty’s welcoming Buster with open arms! Buster is an adorable, and already very well-loved dog here at Doherty, and Mr. Whalen was kind enough to answer the following questions about him!
Let’s get to know Buster – What breed is he? When is his birthday? What is his favorite treat?
Buster is a two-year-old Black Labrador Retriever, born on 12/2/23, and Buster loves Apples!
How long did it take to train him? Who trained him?
Buster has been trained since birth, and he is from NEADS, which is an organization where various workers and volunteers trains and works with dogs, located in Princeton, MA.
What is Buster’s specific role at Doherty?
Buster, taken care of by Mr. Whalen, is an ADI dog that plays a significant role in helping students regulate their emotions. The calming presence of the dog can reduce anxiety, stress, and emotional escalation. Students often find comfort in the non-judgmental companionship of the dog, which helps them self-soothe and regain composure during difficult moments. These dogs also help build trusting relationships between students and adults in the building, and students who may struggle to connect with teachers, counselors, or administrators often form an initial bond with the dog.

What kind of tasks can Buster do?
Buster can do numerous things such as opening doors, turning on or off lights, comforting people with his head on their lap, laying on someone’s lap who is upset, he can jump pretty high, retrieve tissues, and he can do many, many, more!
What is Buster’s litter like?
Buster’s litter has eight puppies, who are also NEADS dogs. His litter has a mix of both black and yellow labs. Buster also graduated training with his yellow-lab brother, Tyson, who was matched with a woman who has hearing loss.
What does Buster like to do on his non-working hours? He loves his play time and he loves sleeping.

What is Mr. Whalen’s favorite thing about having Buster, a service dog?
Mr. Whalen stated that he loves how well-trained Buster is, along with seeing the many smiles Buster brings to the students and staff here at Doherty.
Is there anything students should NOT do around Buster?
Yes, it is asked that students are respectful and to please not be loud, please ask for permission to pet him, and to please never give him any food. Thank you!
