Welcome Doherty and welcome all. The girl’s basketball team lands hard, but they certainly won’t stop.
The team successfully gained a record of 4-4 as of January 12th, with a win against West Boylston. Previously competing against North, Bay Path, and Fitchburg while winning as the cherry on top, the Highlanders support runs deep.
Starting off with a recap from the second latest win against Fitchburg on January 7th, Doherty won 35-26. Fitchburg taking the lead in the first quarter with 8-5, the girls got it back in the second with a matchup of 8-5. Kicking it up at halftime, Doherty scores 22 points between the third and fourth quarters with Fitchburg trailing behind with only thirteen. Analia Brown leading with sixteen game points, Hannah Kursonis put up eleven, and Ava Egonu, Nevaeh Harris, and Yareli Sanchez all scored to contribute to the end outcome.
An exciting game against West Boylston on Monday, the Lady Landers totaled 61 against the other team, the Lions coming in with 51. Starting off, Doherty took the lead 15-12, continuing their streak with 21 and 16 points in the second and third quarters. Doherty finished it off with nine, West Boylston managed to pull out 20 in the last quarter of the game, but Doherty’s high led to the victorious win in the final stretch.
With six dominant scorers in that game, Brown managed to put up sixteen. Ava Egonu as versatile as ever, scored thirteen. Hannah Kursonis and Masseta Fofona working the paint all around, Kursonis had eleven points and Fofana 10. Not stopping there, Allie Soufleris shot nine working well with defense, Isabella Llanos followed behind with two.
There’s never a dull moment in basketball, and the season is proving to be a good turn out. With what it takes to be a student athlete, these young ladies have stepped up to honor Doherty, gratitude all around. Catch the next game Friday, January 16th against NDA, at home.
