Quick Background?
Women’s History Month is a month all about honoring, recognizing and celebrating the women who impact our lives in every way. It helps highlight the ongoing struggle for gender equality and helps educate the public about women’s contributions to culture, politics, science, and society as a whole.
The actual celebration of Women’s History Month began as a weeklong event in 1978, organized by the school district of Sonoma, California, to recognize women’s contributions in our culture, history and society. A few years later, the idea gained massive momentum and spread to communities, school districts, and organizations across the country. In fact, President Jimmy Carter issued the first presidential proclamation declaring the week of March 8th as Nation Women’s History Week in 1980.
Womens History Month starts on Sunday, March 1st, 2026 through Tuesday, March 31st, 2026.
A big part of Women’s History Month is its annual themes. The National Women’s History Alliance usually selects a theme each year for Women’s History Month. The 2026 theme, “Leading the change: Women Shaping a Sustainable Future,” honors women leading sustainability efforts across all movements.
